Tenerife Symphony Orchestra – 75th Anniversary Concerts

Two extraordinary concerts to mark the milestone 75 years of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. The TSO likes to take its music out to different venues and this concert is a short trip from their usual Santa Cruz Auditorium base. Teatro Guimera has recently been refurbished is a fitting historic venue for this concert. Starts at 8.30 pm on 28th and 29th October. Water Colours By Carmen Gonzalez Castro, 23 Sep to 5 Oct

The Cabildo Bookstore in Santa Cruz presents a selection of water colours by local artist Carmen Gonzalez Castro who trained at the Escuela Municipal de Artes Plasticas (municipal school of plastic arts) in the Tenerife capital. The latest work features flowers, landscapes and seascapes.

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 1pm and 5 pm to 8 pm.

European Free Diving in Santa Cruz & Radazul, 7 – 12 October

If you like your sport extreeme, this is a great event to watch. Free diving involves long spells holding breath underwater after diving for time or distance. This championship takes place from 7 to 12 October in Radazul and Santa Cruz. There will be 50 competitors from 8 countries testing themselves to the limit.

The Acidalio Lorenzo swimming pool in Santa Cruz will be home to dynamic diving, this involves horizontal diving to see how far swimmers can travel underwater. El Rosario is the district and Radazul is the coastal area  for the blue sea jump which takes place against natures back drop.

Tenerife Childrens Tennis Tournament, 3 to 12 Sept, Sign Up Now

Santa Cruz could be your springboard to tennis fame or just a key to getting more fun and fitness from your game. Boys and girls are needed at all levels from newcomer, novice, youth, cadet and junior to join a field of around 200 players competing in the 9th Annual Childrens Tennis Tournament Isla de Tenerife from 3rd to 12th September at the Cabildo (government) Tennis Centre in Santa Cruz.

Roller Coaster Music Festival – 11 September

Castillo de San Cristobal – Now Open In Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is bursting with history, Castillo de San Cristobal was built in 1575 as one of the main strongholds against Tenerife invaders. It was demolished in 1928 but unknown to many, the base of the structure was still partly intact under Plaza de España and when it was dug up and remodelled in 2006, the historic foundations came to light.
Now after another major restoration the historic foundations are open to the public complete with the famous Tigre canon that put a hole in one of Nelsons invading armada during his failed assault of 25 July 1797. The Tigre is made of bronze, weighs 2,000 kms and is 3 metres long. There is a multi lingual display explaining the history of the castle and this part of Santa Cruz.
The FREE attraction is open in July, August and September from 11 am to 7 pm everyday except Tuesday. The rest of the year it opens from 10 am to 8 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Nelsons Attack On Santa Cruz – 24 & 25 July

On 25 July 1797 Lord Nelson and the British fleet attacked Santa Cruz but were repelled by the Tenerife forces. This historic act is commemorated each year with re-enactments of the major clashes of the attempted invasion and this year the action plays out in dramatic style with reproduction uniforms and weapons used by both sides in La Gesta.

Saturday 24 July
Noon till 2pm – British troops arrive by sea at the Castillo San Juan (next to the Auditorium) and meet fierce resistance. It was during this attempt that Lord Nelson lost his arm after being shot.
8pm – Battle at Plaza Iglesia de la Concepcion and in defence of Calle la Noria
9-45pm – British surrender at Plaza Isla de Madera.
Sunday 25 July
Noon – Formal surrender of British troops by Captain Troubridge to the Spanish Governor of Tenerife, Juan Antonio Gutierrez, in the Plaza Candelaria

Tenerife Lan Party, 20 – 25 July

The annual new technology fair, last year it attracted 15,000 visitors. Already this year over 800 inscriptions have been received for the event. Presented by the Tenerife Cabildo and Innov 7 it features 60 courses and conferences as well as a huge choice of cutting edge display stands.
The Recinto Ferial is on the main road into Santa Cruz, Avenida de la Constitucion and there is parking for 500 cars. open daily from 11am to 9pm. More info at the website www.tenerife-lanparty.com
