Christmas and New Year message from Tenerife Cabildo
“Once again Christmas traditions inspire us to give our individual best.
It is precisely at this special time of year when we make a supreme effort to express the virtues which form a part of our lives. This is the season when good hearted feelings, solidarity, understanding and goodwill towards others take on a special role independently of the current difficult circumstances facing us.
And certainly more than ever it is a time when these sentiments become clearly apparent in a society which, to a great deal, has been marked by setbacks. The people of Tenerife as a whole are plunged in an unfavourable socio-economic situation caused by the effect of external factors produced far away from our shores but due to global realities they affect us in the same way. It has caused negative effects on the daily lives of many families who, today more than ever, need the support of others to be able to get back to normal. “This has been one of the maxims which have outlined the Island Government’s work during the year which is coming to an end. Our action has been defined by a clear will to contribute towards resolving the misfortune of those whose lives have been restricted by setbacks. For this reason, social policies have been a priority. This is a line of action which, naturally, we are going to take in the future because in our view people continue to be the most important and we place them above any other consideration.
To overcome the current situation is a task we all share in common, a goal we should strive to reach together with determination and decisiveness. No one should fall behind; it is up to each of us to devote his or her efforts to achieve a recovery which the people of Tenerife deserve like any other. We have already had to face adverse circumstances at other times in our history and we overcame them. Once more this spirit should now become patently clear to help us to achieve our goal.
In any case, the festive season is a time for taking stock and expressing our feelings but it also a time for celebrating and declaring our hope in a happier future. This principle should define our spirits combined with confidence in ourselves and in our ability to make our wishes come true.
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you all,”
Ricardo Melchior Navarro
President Tenerife Island Government
