June 20, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Living on a volcanic island like Tenerife it’s important to be aware of the history and nature of its past and to assess future risks in a measured and responsible way. Involcan, the Canarian Institute of Volcanology is raising awareness with a programme of free talks looking at the influence of volcanoes in Tenerife.
These talks will take place at 8 pm in the Museo de La Naturaleza y El Hombre (museum of nature and man) in Santa Cruz on 21, 22 and 23 June. The first two days will feature film shows entitled Comprendiendo los Peligros Volcánicos (understanding volcanic risks) y Reduciendo el Riesgo Volcánico (reducing the volcanic risk). On the third day there is a presentation about volcanic phenomenon and the specific risks to the Canary Islands.
There is a programme of security and emergency measures set in place across the Canary Islands in case of a volcanic emergency and these presentations help to keep people informed of the organisations that are planning to minimise disruption from any volcanic activity. There is a series of pre planned emerbency measures set up by Plan Especial de Protección Civil y Atención de Emergencias por Riesgo Volcánico en Canarias (PEVOLCA) and local civil protection, both of these organisations have played a part in putting together these informed talks.

You don’t have to be mad to enter this but it helps. A chance to clamber through mud and over obstacles on a fiendish assault course built next to the Puerto de la Cruz harbour, that’s in the big race that starts at 5.30 pm but there are activities all day from 10 am including skate boarding and trial biking. If you want to take part you must register by 6 April and pay your 25 euros, otherwise just turn up and enjoy laughing at other peoples antics.
