Three days of professional beach volleyball action at Playa Fañabe, Tenerife ended with Austria as mens champions and Germany as ladies winners in the pre Olympic Continental Cup. The games were played in the Davis Cup mode used in tennis that meant all teams faced each other ensuring the most consistent countries emerged triumphant in Costa Adeje.
The ladies competition was a real thriller with little to separate Germany from Italy so at two sets each it went into a golden set decider. Ludwig and Semmler took on Cicolari and Menegatti and eventually emerged winners by 15 to 10 to lift gold. Spain’s pair Liliana and Baquerizo won both of their sets but Hopf and Caballero lost their first set before hitting back later to make it 3-1 to clinch the bronze medal place.
In the mens action Spain and Norway were hot favourites but Austria brushed everyone aside with some skillful and determined play. Spain’s pairs made too many errors and had to settle for the third place play off where they finally showed top form and beat the Czech Republic in three straight sets all by a 2-0 margin. The battle for gold was closer, Austria built a two set lead with 2-0 wins but the Czechs fought back to take the third set 2-1, Austria weren’t to be denied the gold and sealed the title with Horrem and Hordvik winning the fourth set 2-0.
The temporary stands around the playing area were busy all weekend with slick presentation keeping new fans of beach volleyball informed and at the training nets next door many converts had their first taste of playing this fast exciting sport.
