Tenerife Macerated Wines Wow European Experts
May 10, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
The wines of Tenerife have a long history of praise and awards but it’s always rewarding to be picked by industry experts. The 2 latest winners are Viña Norte 2010 and El Ancon , both in the Tinto Maceration Carbonica 2010 category as voted for by Sobremesa Magazine in their monthly run down of the best 100 wines in Europe.
Maceration is a process used with red wines after the fermentation stage and brings out the rich colour and flavour. These winning Tenerife wines were from the Bodega Insulares de Tenerife, in the case of Viña Norte from the Tacoronte – Acentejo region and El Ancon from the Ycoden-Daute-Isora region.
Sobremesa is the magazine of the Vino Selecion, one of the oldest groups of wine experts in Europe. The judges for the wines included famous names from wine journalism such as Juan Manuel Ruiz Casado and Jesus Flores. These wines are well worth seeking out as they are both very reasonable in price, Viña Norte at 8 euros a bottle and El Ancon at 5.45 euros a bottle.
Museum Of Science And The Cosmos Is 18 Years Old
May 10, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Time travels fast and on Wednesday 11 May the Museo de la Ciencia Y El Cosmos celebrates 18 years since its opening in 1993 by the Coporacion Insular and the Canarian Institute of Astrophysics. The distinctive La Laguna building with its large satellite dish on the roof has made great strides since its birth and is now even more accessible with its own tram stop in Avenida Los Menceyes on the way into La Laguna from Santa Cruz.
To help mark this special milestone the museum is launching a comic to introduce the younger visitors to Agustin de Betancourt who was born in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife and died in St Petersburg, Russia. Agustin de Betancourt was a famous engineer who achieved such status in Russia that an asteroid Betankur was named after him 1n 1978, the only object in space to be named after a Canarian. The museum paid its own tribute on the 250 th anniversary of his birth in November 2008 by naming the plaza outside the building after him and unveiling a bust of the great man.
The comic is a very appropriate idea as the museum is very popular with school parties, they also have regular astronomy parties at night using the rooftop telescope. The Museum of Science & the Cosmos is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, except Mondays, entry is 3 euros for adults or 1.50 for children, pay with a bono bus ticket for a 50% discount. The planetarium is an extra 1 euro.
European Solar Energy Days At ITER
May 9, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Everyone has a double take when they pass the Granadilla wind turbines by the TF 1 heading north but they are just a small part of ITER – Instituto Tecnologico y Energias Renovables, the renewable energy project that puts Tenerife at the leading wave of research. To help celebrate the Dias Solares Europeos ITER has arranged a series of free guided tours of the site with a big emphasis on the part solar power can play in ensuring a sustainable future.
The vast banks of solar panels power many of the operations carried out at ITER such as the desalination plant that turns sea water into a drinkable safe form. As part of the tour you can see the sun being used to cook food in a solar oven. ITER is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm for unguided tours from the visitors centre down through the ecological walkway in the shadow of the huge wind turbines.
These special guided solar days tours will also take you to the bioclimatic housing estate where solar energy is just one element of these 30 self sustainable homes. ITER has a team of seismic experts that are constantly monitoring the volcanic Canary Islands and their expert knowledge is always in demand around the world at seismic hot spots and eruptions.
For further information on the European Solar Days check their website and for an in depth look at ITER you can look through their website – both of these have English as an option. If you want to do the guided tour please phone 922 747736 to book your place, the ITER entrance is sign posted from the Granadilla Industrial Estate turn off on the TF1 motorway.
