The Guanches and the Sea

The ancient inhabitants of Tenerife, the Guanches, made good use of the wealth of food of our shores, and this exhibition which runs until June 28 looks at some of the techniques used in the first millenium.

It’s fitting that the setting is the Museum of Nature and Man in Santa Cruz, just by the bridge over the Barranco Santos at Calle Fuentes Morales. This museum houses the Guanche mummies as well as a complete history of how the Canary Islands developed, geographically and socially.

A special area set aside for this exhibition contains lots of clues to the past as well as a full scale model of a Roman bodega. Admission is from Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Mondays) from 9 am to 7 pm. Prices are 3 euros adults and 1.50 concessions, with FREE entry on Sundays. Payment with a Bono bus ticket brings a discount of 50 per cent.

You’ve maybe read the Roddy Doyle book , and have almost certainly seen the 1991 Alan Parker film, but now you can see The Commitments live on stage at the Tenerife Auditorium on Sunday May 3, from 9pm.

Mustang Sally, Take Me To The River, and Try A Little Tenderness, are just some of the soul hits that powered the film to being an international sensation. Follow this mainly Irish cast as they play a gang of down on their luck Dubliners with a common love of music, who fight against the odds to perform the songs they love.
